Polyptych
Presentation
Inspired by a polyptych by Duccio depicting the final episodes of Christ’s life, Frank Martin composed for Yehudi Menuhin a work in six tableaux, at once deeply narrative and introspective. Around this masterful composition, Marianne Piketty and Le Concert Idéal bring together Bach, Vivaldi, Lotti, Victoria and Chédeville: five centuries of music united by the same expressive power.
Frank Martin’s emotions find their echoes in the works of the past. The centuries answer one another, musical languages intersect, and a shared humanity emerges.
Structured as a succession of images, Polyptyque leads from darkness towards peace. The works respond to one another, embracing and transforming our inner turmoil, gradually tracing a path where beauty opens up another perspective on the chaos of the world.
Once again, Marianne Piketty and her ensemble demonstrate their remarkable sense of phrasing, light, clarity of dynamics and storytelling, together with the rare ability to bring together, in a single momentum and with the same quality of interpretation, music requiring entirely different playing techniques. An impressive stylistic versatility that embraces both early and modern music, ultimately leaving us with nothing but emotion.
